Tina Tang’s Favorite Flatiron Places
Food
F1: Ennju, Japanese canteen, 20 East 17th Street
If you see Japanese students eating here, you can be assured that the food is authentic at this casual buffet style food canteen. This is where I get my quick and fresh sushi from the Japanese run lunch room style joint.
F2: Trader Joe’s, gourmet groceries, 675 6th Avenue
My second in command, Bobbie, and I go to TJ every day. It’s part of our daily ritual. What place more than TJ nourishes the soul with its lunch offerings, its cheap essentials, its affordable and delicious cereals, and its happy employees? Even though this is a California based company, us East Coasters still find this chain to be a covetable place to shop. How can you beat their Sutter Recipe Peanut Butter Cookies?
F3: Eataly, Italian food shopping and cuisine, 200 Fifth Avenue
Can chef, Mario Batali, do no wrong in New York City? His empire in NYC has added this humongous Italian food marketplace. There has been a queue here from day one where even the die hard New York neighbors don’t mind waiting 45 minutes to eat a scrumptious meal in this cavernous EATALY.
F4: Cupcake Café, café and bakery, 18 West 18th Street
Is it possible that a cupcake can be too pretty to take a brutish bite into? These cupcakes not only look like an impressionist painting, but the cake is firm, not hard, the icing is light, not too sweet. I sneak away from the office to purchase these cupcakes for my own delight.
F5: Devi, fine Indian restaurant, 8 East 18th Street
Upscale and chic Indian food, this two level restaurant is intimate, delicious, and a quiet oasis in the busy Flatiron district.
F6: Momoya, sushi restaurant, 187 Seventh Avenue
As plentiful as sushi is in New York City, this is a decent, generous portioned, and fresh Japanese restaurant with a sister restaurant on the Upper West Side.
F7: Periyali, 35 West 20th Street
This pretty little Greek restaurant has been in this neighborhood for over 20 years and it continues to impress me. This is my reliable go to restaurant for just drinks or a classy and scrumptious dinner.
Fashion
T1: Club Monaco, clothing, 160 Fifth Avenue
While this is a chain based out of Canada, and located in many other US cities, I always find myself wandering in here, always finding something I want to buy. Dare I say I stop by here almost daily? If you are in the neighborhood, its worth stopping in here for something classic, fashionable, and work worthy to wear
T2: Keito, Italian made shoes, 137 Fifth Avenue
I bought 3 pairs of cork platform sandals from here, same style three different colors. Everything is made in Italy, the greatest place for leather goods, and Keito is all private label. Full priced shoes are somewhat expensive, and worth it if you love them. Keito always puts on a great sale which cuts a $300 pair of shoes down to $99.
T3: Fisch for the Hip, designer consignment, 153 West 18th Street
Looking for a hand me down Hermes Kelly bag that looks brand new? Fisch for the Hip is the place to find luxury clothing, handbags, or shoes, consigned by the owners who simply got bored with the item. Sometimes models who receive merchandise for free sell their stash here. The owner knows how to pick items and one will never be disappointed in finding something you desire. The hardest part is to negotiate with yourself whether you want to take on more debt to purchase that suit, purse, or pair of shoes you simply must own.
T4: Journelle, fine lingerie, 3 West 17th Street
An intimate, friendly and beautiful lingerie shop that is tucked away on a side street between Union Square and Flatiron. The staff is knowledgeable and they actually wear the product in the shop! The lingerie simply makes a girl love being a girl. The prices are a bit higher, but they reflect the quality of the goods Journelle sells.
T5: Fish’s Eddy, interesting ceramics, 889 Broadway
Quintessential New York. Find funky printed ceramic plates here, Cynthia Rowley designed dishware and remnants from old diners in this tightly packed local dish shop. I purchased my glassware from here – all for 99 cents each!
T6: Muji Japanese, modern lifestyle shop, 16 West 19th Street
Clean designs, affordable prices. This Japanese chain of daily items, ceramics and clothing is a welcome presence in Flatiron. I bought a hat and a white serving dish. This lifestyle store is simply fabulous and worth the visit.
